How to lower the cost of fuel
Check for Coupons in Newspapers
For whatever reason, the idea of cutting coupons and use stores reward cards has escaped many people today. I don’t know if it is because it takes a little extra time, or if it is perceived as being cheap, but there are a ton of opportunities to save money with weekly coupons or merchants club cards. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes to flip through your local newspaper and see if there is anything you can use, and chances are, there will be. Just a couple coupons can save you a few bucks each shopping trip.
You could easily cut your food cost by 10%-20% or more by using stores club card and coupons.
The Fuel Rewards Network™
In recent years many grocery stores and online shopping networks begun rewarding loyal shoppers with fuel rewards. The Fuel Rewards Network™ program is a free loyalty program that helps consumers save money on fuel. You’ll earn Fuel Rewards® savings for doing things you already do every day, and you can redeem your rewards at the pump to watch your fuel price drop. After you create your FRN™ Account and log in, you can shop through the Fuel Reward Online Mall at more than 700 brand name merchants and earn 5¢-30¢/gallon for every $50 spent. You can also dine out at more than 10,000 participating locations and earn 10¢/gal for every $50 spent.
Frequent coupons for frequent shoppers
Many large grocery stores will also reward loyal customers with fuel points, and preferred-customers could earn extra savings at the pump by shopping frequently.
1) Kroger’s will reward 10 cents per gallon of fuel for every $100 worth of groceries you buy.
2) Every dollar you spend at Stop & Shop earns a point on your card. After 100 points, you’ll save 10¢/gallon on gas and you can redeem up to $2.20/gallon in a single fill up. Visit stopandshop.com for a store near you.
3) Safeway Club Card members earn up to 10-cent bonuses for eligible purchases of $50 or more through the grocer’s Power Pump program. Occasionally Safeway will issue reward coupons of 30 cents per gallon when you spend $50 or more on groceries. Visit safeway.com.
4) Giant Food customers earn “Gas Rewards” at Shell gas stations and save 10 cents per gallon of gas when they spend $50 or more on groceries. Giant food also issues reward coupons of 30 cents per gallon when you spend $50 or more on groceries.
5) Meijer’s Fuel Rewards Program: Look for “free gas” signs around the store. Then purchase participating products and you’ll receive free gas rewards at the checkout that you can use at any Meijer Gas Station.
6) FuelLinks card will earn you “cash-for-gas” on your purchases. Join online at fuellinks.com, check out the extensive list of participants and start earning rewards redeemable at certain gas stations.
No more Debit Card!!!
Don’t pay for gas with your debit card (at the pump or inside the store). Some banks charge fees for using the card, which increases the cost of already pricey gas.
“Save Money Live Better”- Walmart
Smart shoppers could significantly reduce their weekly grocery bill by using coupons, and at the same time earn fuel points using their store club cards. Most grocery stores will provide up to $20 of in-store coupons and up to 30 cents per gallon in fuel savings for every $100 spent on groceries, so a yearly food bill of $5000 could be easily cut by $1000, and at the same time, an annual fuel bill of $2500 could be cut by additional $250. Smart shoppers could save serious money at the store and at the pump.

We have a grocery store chain called HyVee in the midwest that has a fuel saver card that can be used at their gas stations. Each week there is a list of items that are on sale, and if you buy them you “earn” cents off your next gas purchase. They can be accumulated for up to a month – one time I filled up for $1.25 a gallon!
Wow! But my only question is, do you think it is better to get weekly discounts for free without buying anything, or get even more of a discount for buying specific items listed weekly?
Just a food for thought.
Thanks Brock!!!
I’d prefer to just get X amount of gas per dollar spent I guess….as it’s easy to fall into the trap of spending more on groceries just so you can save more on gas (which really isn’t saving money). We are careful to only buy the items we NEED at that particular grocery store (we buy items at 2-3 different stores to get the best prices) and if we happen to hit on items that save us money on gas, then that’s a double bonus.
I hear you.
Thanks for the contribution!
I use gasbuddy app to look for the cheapest gas station. I also use a credit card that gives me 5% cash back for gas purchases. I’ve never seen coupons for gas!
Alright, that seems reasonable. Let’s hope they become more prevalent!
I need to remember to try my safeway card next time. I have some points on it, but the magnetic strip doesn’t work anymore. The last time I remembered I didn’t feel like going inside to the register to see if they could look up my account.
Safeway is great.
Thanks for the comment.
Great tips, David. I try to save money on gas by driving smoothly and not keeping extra stuff in our vehicle, but sometimes that only goes so far, so I am always on the lookout for cheaper prices. In the US, your gas prices are substantially cheaper than here in Canada, so occasionally I like to zip over the border to fill up.
