Russia predicted “six-figure numbers” infected with COVID-19
Epidemiologist, candidate of medical sciences Alexander Vygonailov said that a wave of the omicron strain of coronavirus in Russia could cause a sharp increase in the incidence. In his opinion he shared in an interview with URA.RU.
Vygonailov admitted that the rise in the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia could reach 100 thousand infected per day. He also warned the Russians of possible additional restrictions due to the sharp increase in new cases of coronavirus. The expert explained this by the short incubation period of omicron and its high contagiousness.
“If at the delta at the peak in Russia there were 41,000 infections, then at least a six-figure figure is expected here, 100 thousand, and maybe more,” the epidemiologist predicted.
In turn, molecular biologist, virologist, leading researcher at Lomonosov Moscow State University Maxim Skulachev said that an increase in the incidence of coronavirus to 100,000 people a day can only occur in Moscow.
“Next week or next week, I think we will see six-figure infections, 100, 200, 300 thousand per day. It would be a great success if, for example, in Moscow there were less than 100,000 a day,” he added.
